Melbourne is unlikely to sanction three players - Nathan
Carroll, Brock McLean and Jared Rivers - involved in a fight at a
Greek nightclub during the club's post-season trip to Europe.
Demons chairman Paul Gardner said police attended the fracas, which
occurred last night on the Greek island of Ios, after the players
were reportedly set on by a group of Swedish tourists.
He said Carroll was hit on the head with an object, possibly a
bottle.
But he said the players came out of the fight unhurt and no charges
were laid.
The Demons players are partway through their trip and Gardner said
he would be seeking a full explanation of the incident when they
returned to Australia.
But at this stage it was unlikely the club would impose any
punishment.
"Not with the information we currently have," Gardner told
Melbourne radio station SEN.
"Should any more information come to light we would certainly have
another look at it.
"But at this stage it looks like it was a bit of a fracas in a bar
in a Greek island."
However, he said the club was disappointed that their players had
found trouble.
"There certainly was an argument and the club is disappointed
whenever a player gets into any trouble whatsoever and we look
forward to talking to them more about it when they get back to
Australia," he said.
He said the group was next heading for Croatia.
"We're pleased to report that they're all well and in fact all on
their way now to Croatia ... which is good news for them and maybe
not so good news for people holidaying in Croatia," Gardner
said.
He suggested it was not unusual for young Australian tourists to
find trouble in some overseas countries, saying it was not an issue
limited to footballers on end-of-season trips.
"I'm not sure too many people on the island of Ios recognise them
as footballers," he said.
"But certainly I think they have to be mindful whether you're 20 or
25 or 30, whether you're a footballer or not a footballer, that in
some countries these situations can break out."
