West Coast Eagles premiership stars Adam Hunter and Brett Jones have both played their last games of the season - and increased the odds of the Eagles' first ever wooden spoon - after both were scheduled for major surgery in the coming days.
Neither Hunter nor Jones will travel to Brisbane to take on the Lions at the Gabba this weekend, with Hunter needing operations on shoulder and knee complaints, and Jones on a serious knee injury.
Coach John Worsfold said yesterday it was yet to be determined when the pair would undergo the season-ending surgery, but a club statement issued today said it would happen within the next week.
"Both men have finally succumbed to debilitating injuries in recent weeks, and will need operations to rectify those problems," the statement said.
"Brett Jones requires surgery to correct an issue where cartilage at the back of his knee cap is badly worn, causing swelling which has made it difficult for him to run and turn.
"Adam Hunter requires a shoulder reconstruction as well as knee surgery. Cartilage has also been worn away at the back of his knee cap, causing pain when attempting to kick over longer distances, as well as leaping off that leg.
"Hunter and Jones will be on modified programs when pre-season training starts in October."
The knee injury to Jones is causing the Eagles the most concern, with a recommended 12-month lay off for what Worsfold described as a 'bony' problem.
"His (Jones') surgery is such that surgeons would suggest he needed 12 months rest, but they understand elite sports people don't have that luxury,'' Worsfold said.
"It is a bony problem and associated cartilage problems. It is fairly major in terms of the time it takes to fully heal.
"Ideally he will be four months without running on it.''
And Worsfold said Hunter - who missed four games earlier in the year after hyperextending his knee earlier this year - had carried his injuries throughout most of the season.
"He is pretty sore and he needs surgery to fix both his problems,'' Worsfold said.
"But the question is when do you think what he gives the team is not enough and he might as well go and get fixed?
"Look at him in the backline last week, he struggled to play how he can play. He could run out and play this week but play below his best.
"It is starting to get to the point where it is starting to wear him down.''
Mitch Brown (knee), Beau Waters (elbow) and Chris Masten (groin) have already had their seasons ended by injury, while Shannon Hurn (leg) and Matt Rosa (ankle) also unlikely to appear again this year.
And Daniel Kerr will miss the next three games, including the
round 17 derby against Fremantle, with his second tribunal
suspension of the year.
